What is HAKI?

HAKI│覇気

Haki is a special Japanese term that describes a person’s life-force, and this term encompasses multiple meanings which can be understood as willpower, drive, ambition, vigor and aspiration. Every living being has Haki and it can be strengthened through physical training.

Very often we separate the physical and the spiritual aspects of our being as if they are two different elements and thus tend to pursue one or the other. This choice then usually leads to glorifying one element and vilifying, demeaning or neglecting the other.

However, if we just stopped and thought about it for a moment, our personality, mood, temperament and even thinking is affected by the condition of our body and the physical world around us. Hormones, illnesses, hunger, hot or cold temperatures, physical comfort or discomfort, various medicines, light, gravity, weather directly affect our thinking and behavior.

Things like confidence, mental fortitude, patience, perseverance and calmness isn’t magic. Our spirit, soul, mind and life-force isn’t some mysterious power that is imprisoned in a physical container, it is the expression of our physical body and our reaction to the environment. Our mind and body is not separate and if we pursue one without the other, if we don’t reconcile with our mind and body, we will not be able to live the life that we were always meant to live. A strong body pushes the mind to pursue grander goals, and a strong mind pushes the body to carry out those grand ideas in the real world.

Haki is the unity of the mind and the body. Unite the physical and the spiritual aspects of yourself and break through your own mental and physical limits. An active lifestyle and proper nutrition strengthens Haki, and those with activated, awakened HAKI aren’t afraid of facing difficulties, don’t get crushed by defeat and don’t lose happiness or hope even at the darkest hour.

Awaken your HAKI!
